Walka Waterworks Masterplan and Implementation

Client: Maitland City Council

Location: Maitland, NSW

Completed: 2014, 2017

The 112 hectare historic waterworks site at Walka in NSW’s Hunter Region encompasses buildings and infrastructure of national heritage significance, areas of scenic beauty and natural significance and activities of local community significance.

Convergence’s masterplan for the site drew on the site’s history to recommend a set of interpretative programs that would fall under the overarching theme of ‘restoring body and mind’. The masterplan proposes a hubs and cluster site planning approach to reinforce and support existing and new activities across the site.

It proposes a central reception and distribution point and the creation of self-contained activity points. Since the completion of the masterplan in 2014 Convergence has implemented the first stage recommendation - the Walka Ecology Platform - and is currently working on the second phase of implementation.
