Blackwater International Coal Centre

Client: Blackwater Regional Council

Location: Blackwater, QLD

Completed: 2008

Convergence undertook the feasibility study in conjunction with Pacific North West in 2006 and was subsequently appointed to design and implement the project in 2008.

The Blackwater International Coal Centre, located 200 km west of Rockhampton, explains the nature of coal, coal mining and the important role it plays in our everyday lives. The exhibits look at coal formation, the history of coal mining, contemporary mining and the clean coal’ and new sustainable technologies currently being developed.

Like the mining industry, some of the exhibits are large in scale, utilising large scale audio visual multimedia with some immersive components, graphic and object based displays to interpret the two linking thematic strands of time and the relationship between humans and the planet. The centre includes a theatre (for first run movies), training facilities, park landscaping and a café, all of which are available to the local Blackwater community.
