Repurposing the Chan

Convergence directors Jenni Klempfner and Russell Magee consulted to the Northern Territory government as expert advisors in the quest to repurpose the historically significant Chan building to create a new contemporary art gallery and iconic architectural centrepiece for the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT).
The new campus was intended to house both major touring exhibitions and a significant portion of MAGNT’s Indigenous and contemporary art collection. It was also intended to form the centrepiece for a range of arts and cultural festivals to be developed in Darwin’s Parliamentary Precinct.
As expert advisor in the development, planning and construction of new museums and art gallery buildings Convergence wrote the functional brief for the repurposing of the Chan and provided advice to the NT Department of the Arts, MAGNT and the NT Department of Infrastructure Office of Major Projects. Convergence assisted with the running of the design competition, sat on the competition and tender assessment panels, advised on the development of tender documents and worked with the successful architects to develop tender documentation.
