Sovereign Hill Diggings and Chinese Camp Long Term Interpretive Concept Plan

Client: The Sovereign Hill Museums Association

Location: Sovereign Hill, Ballarat

Completed: 2022

Convergence’s Long Term Interpretive Concept Plan refocuses interpretation in the Diggings and Chinese Protectorate Camp precincts to integrate universal, human stories from the goldfields with traditional interpretation of mining technology.

Acknowledged by the Sovereign Hill board as a transformational document that provides a new methodological approach and future for the museum, it identifies critical maintenance and accessibility priorities, accommodates and addresses the impact of planned new infrastructure and visitor programs and facilitates interactions suited to 21st century audiences. The plan logically confirms the place of the Diggings and Chinese Protectorate Camp as the core of the Living Museum.

Convergence’s inclusive approach was critical to ensuring universal acceptance and commitment to the plan by Sovereign Hill’s executive, curatorial, facilities, education, public programs and volunteer teams.

Works associated with implementation of the first phase of the interpretative plan will be undertaken in 2023.
