Defence of Darwin Experience

Client: Northern Territory Government

Location: Darwin, NT

Completed: 2012

Collaborators: The Pod Multimedia

The brief for the Defence of Darwin Experience called for a new visitor centre to be built at East Point in Darwin and the linking of eight other significant sites around Darwin as part of an overall visitor experience.

The resultant approach developed by Convergence combines the concept of a “Dispersed Mediascape”, using mobile phone technology, with a visitor hub to deliver a “museum without walls”. The hub, located at East Point uses original artefacts, archival footage and images, firsthand accounts and contemporary multi-media techniques to focus on the first bombing of Darwin by the Japanese on the 19th of February 1942.

It provides a powerful immersive experience that has become one of Darwin’s most popular attractions.

The Defence of Darwin Experience is a powerful, immersive, interactive experience, located at iconic East Point, Darwin. It tells the story of an extraordinary, but little known chapter in Australian history, the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese on the 19 February 1942. Opened in 2012, as part of the 70th commemoration of the bombing of Darwin, the Defence of Darwin Experience has quickly grown to be one of the most powerful attractions in the Top End.
