Royal Women’s Hospital Interpretation Plan and NICU Tree of Life

Client: Royal Women’s Hospital Location: Melbourne, VIC, Australia Completed: 2009
Convergence investigated how best to use the rich resources housed in the Royal Women’s Hospital archive collection within a new $250m facility. The strategy called for elements of the archive to be used throughout the hospital to illustrate the hospital’s long-standing and ongoing commitment to providing excellent care to all women. Convergence developed the ‘Tree of Life’, an installation in the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit, which illustrates the hospital’s expertise and success in looking after very small and sick babies. The tree features a photomontage timeline of doctors and medical staff with babies who have now grown to strong and healthy adults after spending their early days in the unit. It is integrated with artworks from the local aboriginal community.
