Eureka Stockade Centre

Client: Ballarat Council Location: Ballarat, Vic, Australia Completed: 1998
The Stockade Centre marks the site of the Eureka Stockade Rebellion of 1854. Designed and constructed (in association with Mothers Art) Convergence developed the exhibits for the Centre. The exhibition is an evocative mix of objects and theatrical environments telling the story of the gold rush to Ballarat and the rise in tensions between the authorities and the miners. The exhibition culminates with the battle scene featuring 5-meter high sculptures and a theatrical sound and light program capturing the intensity of the battle. Visitors exit through a contemplation zone where the names of soldiers and miners killed are inscribed on the wall. A hall of debate allows visitors to hear a range of historians debate the impact of the uprising and to hold their own debate.
